The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) has warned that strong Mwera Winds are expected to blow over Lake Malawi and other major water bodies from Saturday, 19th July to Wednesday, 23rd July 2025, posing a serious risk to lives and property.

According to a weather alert issued by the department, the strong southeasterly air mass will generate high and potentially dangerous waves over Lake Malawi, Lake Malombe, Lake Chirwa, and surrounding water bodies. These conditions are likely to affect fishing, sailing, and other lake-related activities.

“Waves generated by these winds could capsize small boats, disrupt transport and recreational activities, and increase the risk of drowning,” reads the statement.

DCCMS has urged fishers to postpone any planned trips, warning that small boats are at high risk of capsizing. Swimming and other recreational activities on the water bodies should also be suspended until the situation improves. In addition, all lake users are encouraged to secure their boats and equipment along the shoreline to minimise the risk of damage.

Communities living along the lakeshore are being advised to remain on high alert and to closely follow weather updates from DCCMS throughout the five-day period. In case of emergencies, they are encouraged to report incidents to local authorities or disaster response teams.

The Mwera winds are expected to peak over the weekend and gradually weaken by Wednesday, 23rd July.
