Enhancing Weather Forecasting: Advanced Training in Modelling, Data Analysis and Visualisation
Meteorologists at the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) undergo a specialised training in weather modelling, data analysis and visualisation.
Sponsored by Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) under ARCS project , the training aims to strengthen the Department’s capacity in numerical weather prediction and improve the accuracy and timeliness of weather forecasts and warnings provided to the public.
The programme exposes weather forecasters to a range of forecasting tools and techniques. Participants will gain practical experience in interpreting model data, visualising forecast outputs and applying this knowledge in daily forecasting tasks.
This effort is part of the Department’s broader goal to enhance the delivery of accurate weather messages that help communities prepare for changing weather conditions. Forecasters are expected to improve their seasonal rainfall forecasting skills, as well as their ability to produce short and medium range forecasts and issue timely warnings for severe weather events.
Norad’s support highlights the value of international partnerships in building resilience against weather and climate-related risks. As weather patterns become more unpredictable, this training will help ensure that DCCMS continues to provide reliable and effective meteorological services that support livelihoods, safety and national planning.
